Diploma Policy

【Undergraduate Program】
  Taking advantage of its position as the only national university in Saitama Prefecture, which constitutes a part of the Tokyo metropolitan area, Saitama University aims to contribute to the international community by fostering diverse global human resources while developing human resources that meet the needs of the local community.
  In order to achieve these goals, Saitama University has set the following as common goals for the entire university: (1) acquiring in-depth expertise, (2) acquiring a wide range of basic knowledge in a specialized field, (3) acquiring abilities to utilize knowledge for multiple purposes, and (4) awarding bachelor’s degrees to those who have acquired abilities by striving to cultivate qualities that meet the educational objectives of each faculty. In addition, the evaluation of grades and the approval of graduation in each faculty are carried out strictly based on definite and clarified standards.

【Graduate Program】
  The master’s and doctoral programs of Saitama University’s Graduate School provide students with in-depth knowledge from a broad perspective. They cultivate the research skills in their majors, as well as enhance the abilities necessary for professions requiring a high level of expertise. The doctoral program promotes the ability to conduct research activities independently as a researcher, the research skills necessary to engage in highly specialized work, and the rich academic knowledge that forms the basis for such activities.
  To achieve this goal, the Graduate School of Saitama University awards master’s and doctoral degrees to those who have cultivated qualities and acquired abilities that meet the objectives of education in each department. In addition, the evaluation of grades and the certification of completion of each department are carried out strictly based on definite and clarified standards.

Faculty of Liberal Arts
  The Faculty of Liberal Arts confers a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree to students who have acquired the following knowledge and abilities. The students must have earned 124 credits as graduation requirements. Graduation is granted based on the requirements specified in the regulations of the Faculty of Liberal Arts of Saitama University. Grading is done strictly based on the achievement of the goals set for each subject.
(1) The acquisition of in-depth professional knowledge
     Acquiring the following ‘a’ to ‘d’ by studying in the course to which they belong (Global Governance Studies Course, Sociology and Field Studies Course, Philosophy and Historical Studies Course, European and American Studies Course, and Japanese and Asian Studies Course).
     a. The understanding of the results of previous academic research accumulated in each relevant field and acquiring systematic and in-depth expertise.
     b. Proficiency in the methods (including languages) of your field.
     c. The ability to set up their own research questions in their specialized fields and to explore and try to solve them.
     d. The ability to explain and discuss their own research results with others.
(2) The acquisition of a wide range of basic knowledge in the specialized field.
     The following ‘a’ and ‘b’ have been achieved.
     a. Acquiring a wide range of basic knowledge in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
     b. Acquiring basic knowledge in the field related to the specialized field of the course to which they belong.
(3) The acquisition of abilities to utilize knowledge for multiple purposes
     The following ‘a’ to ‘d’ have been acquired.
     a. Ability to formulate their own research questions from a broad perspective
     b. Ability to adequately research and collect the relevant data and expertise.
     c. Ability to think multilaterally and logically on the research question.
     d. Ability to communicate one’s ideas adequately (including language skills)
(4) The acquisition of abilities consistent with the purpose of education in the department.
    Students have acquired the following ‘a’ to ‘b’.
    a. Ability to understand diverse cultures and values
    b. Ability to address contemporary cultural and social issues in a variety of ways.

 

Faculty of Economic
  In the daytime course of the Faculty of Economics, a Bachelor of Economics degree is awarded to those who are judged to have acquired the following knowledge, cultivated the following qualities, and acquired the required abilities, based on a strict grading system with clear standards.
(1) Broad basic knowledge of various sciences
    ・ Understanding of basic knowledge of the humanities
    ・ Understanding of basic knowledge of social sciences
    ・ Understanding of the basic knowledge of natural science
(2)Sufficient knowledge in the specialized field of social science
    ・ Broad knowledge of social sciences
    ・ Systematic and in-depth knowledge and understanding of the area of specialization of each major (Economic Analysis, Global Business and Social Development, Business Innovation, Law and Public Policy).
(3) Ability to identify issues and questions and seek solutions to them on their own initiative
   ・ Ability to identify issues and questions
   ・ Ability to apply knowledge
   ・ Ability to think logically
   ・ Ability to write papers
(4) Ability to have an international perspective, to communicate actively with people in Japan and abroad, and to express opinions and make contributions to society.
   ・ Information literacy
   ・ Communication skills (including foreign language skills)
   ・ Presentation skills
(5) Ability to actively expand one’s own education and professional knowledge after graduation.

  In the main evening course of the Faculty of Economics, a Bachelor of Economics degree is awarded to those who are judged to have acquired the following knowledge, cultivated the following qualities, and acquired the required abilities, based on a strict grading system with clarified standards.

Faculty of Education
  The purpose of the Faculty of Education is to train competent and high-quality teachers who have acquired independent and rich human qualities in various types of schools.
For this reason, the Faculty of Education confers a Bachelor of Education degree to those who have completed the prescribed curriculum, acquired the following knowledge, and acquired the required qualities and abilities.
(1) The acquisition of in-depth expertise
    〇Expertise and skills related to education specified for each course or study
       ・Expertise and skills related to the teaching profession
       ・ Expertise and skills related to the subject or specialized field
(2) The acquisition of a wide range of basic knowledge in the specialized field
    〇 Basic knowledge, attitudes, and abilities that form the foundation of education
       ・ Basic understanding of the Japanese Constitution
       ・ Basic understanding and attitude toward physical and mental health
       ・ Broad understanding of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences<
       ・ Ability to communicate in English
       ・ Information literacy and presentation skills
(3) The acquisition of qualities and abilities consistent with the purpose of education in the faculty.

      ・ Methodological techniques for applying knowledge and skills related to the subject and expertise to instruction

  The Faculty of Education certifies graduation and confers degrees to those who have completed the prescribed curriculum, acquired the required knowledge, and acquired the required qualities and abilities, based on a rigorous grading system with definite and clarified standards.


Faculty of Science
  In the Faculty of Science, a Bachelor of Science degree is awarded to those who have completed the prescribed curriculum, acquired the following, and made efforts to acquire the required abilities and cultivate the required qualities.
(1) Adequate knowledge and thinking ability in the field of natural science
   ・ Basic knowledge of the core fields of natural science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, etc.) and the ability to think based on that knowledge
   ・ Expert knowledge of the specialized fields of study (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biology, or Regulatory and Biology) and the ability to think based on the expertise
(2) A broad basic understanding of various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and a basic understanding of modern technology
   ・ Basic understanding of the core fields of the humanities (Philosophy, History, Literature, etc.)
   ・Basic understanding of the core fields of social science (Law, Political Science, Economics, etc.)
   ・ Basic understanding of modern technology
(3)  “The acquisition of ability to utilize knowledge for multiple purposes”
  ・ Fostering communication skills to adequately communicate with persons from various backgrounds
  ・ Basic understanding of information appliances
  ・ Ability to identify new issues and questions and work on and solve them
(4)  “Qualities and abilities consistent with the purpose of education in the Faculty of Science”.
  ・ Understanding the importance of basic theory without excessive bias toward application or practical use
  ・ Understanding of the basic knowledge necessary for a healthy social life
  ・ Ability to apply expertise to the profession

 
Faculty of Engineering
  In the Faculty of Engineering, students are expected to cultivate their own qualities, acquire a wide range of expertise and in-depth expertise (1) to (3), as well as the ability to think, judge, and express themselves (4) and (5), and acquire independence, diversity, and collaboration (6) and (7). Those students who have acquired abilities that meet the objectives of education in each department will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Graduation is approved based on the criteria set forth in the Regulations of the Faculty of Engineering, Saitama University. Grades are strictly evaluated based on the level of achievement of the objectives set for each subject.
(1) Extensive knowledge of the humanities and social sciences as an education for engineers and researchers
(2) In-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering, such as mathematics, natural science, and information technology
(3) In-depth knowledge in each specialized field
   ・Profound expertise in Mechanical Engineering and Systems Design, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics, and Applied Physics, Information and Computer Sciences,  Applied Chemistry, and Civil and Environmental Engineering
   ・Broad knowledge of other engineering disciplines and interdisciplinary areas related to one’s field of expertise
(4) Practical ability to flexibly respond to and solve complex issues based on acquired knowledge
   ・The ability to think logically and judge
   ・Ability to apply knowledge and solve problems
   ・The ability to design solutions to problems making use of a variety of data
   ・Ability to integrate and systematize various technologies and implement them in society
(5) International perspective and communication skills
   ・The ability to think multilaterally with a global perspective.
   ・Communication skills to adequately communicate with persons with diverse backgrounds
(6) Independence, diversity, and collaboration
   ・Ability to act independently as an engineer and researcher

(7) Professional ethics with an understanding of social responsibility
   ・Ability to understand the impact of science and technology on society and nature, and the social responsibility of engineers and researchers.


Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences
<Master’s Program>
  The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (Master’s Program) has adopted the following Graduation Approval and Degree Awarding Policy (Diploma Policy).
(Department of Social and Cultural Studies)
  A Master of Arts degree is conferred upon those who have acquired a deep and broad knowledge of the humanities and other relevant fields of research, and the ability to gain insight into culture, history and society with an international perspective. They must complete the prescribed curriculum and pass the thesis review and final examination.
(Department of Japanese and Asian Studies)
  The Japanese and Asian Cultures Course confers a Master of Arts degree on those who have completed the prescribed curriculum, passed the thesis examination and final examination, and acquired academic knowledge mainly in the humanities related to Japan and Asia, as well as the ability to gain insight into culture, history and society with an international perspective.
The Japanese and Asian Economics and Management Course confers a Master of Economics degree to those who have acquired knowledge of the culture, history, and society of Japan and Asia and the ability to analyze theoretically and empirically the economy, management, and public administration. They must pass the review of dissertation or research results on a specific subject and the final examination, after completing the prescribed curriculum.
(Department of Economics and Management Studies)
  A Master of Economics degree or a Master of  Business Administration degree  is awarded to those who have acquired knowledge of economics, business administration and public administration, as well as theoretical and empirical analytical skills and the ability to use these skills to exercise leadership, after completing the prescribed curriculum and passing the dissertation review or results of research on a specific subject and the final examination.  

<Doctoral Program>
(Department of Japanese and Asian Cultures)
  A Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded to those who have acquired a deep and broad knowledge of the humanities and other relevant fields of research, as well as expertise required of an independent researcher, after completing the prescribed educational course, passing the dissertation examination and the final examination.
(Department of Economics and Management Studies)
  A Doctor of Economics or a Doctor of Business Administration is awarded to those who have completed the prescribed curriculum, passed the dissertation review and final examination, and acquired the specialized research skills to become independent researchers capable of creating new knowledge in society


Graduate School of Education
<Master’s Program>
 The master’s program of the Graduate School of Education aims to develop graduate students who, in addition to the various knowledge, skills, and perspectives acquired at the bachelor’s level, are equipped with the ability to stand out and will play a leading role in each school and local educational unit.
 For this reason, the master’s program of the Graduate School of Education awards a Master of Education degree to those who have acquired the following knowledge and the required abilities and qualities, based on a rigorous grading and degree approval process based on clear standards.

1. High level of expertise in education-related sciences and subjects
      (Department of School Education)
      (1) Ability to understand issues surrounding school education from the profound perspective of various education-related academic disciplines
      (2) Theoretical knowledge about children (human beings) and the society that forms their background, as well as advanced academic knowledge and skills related to them.
      (3) The ability to understand the latest achievements in practical and educational methods for solving educational issues and problems, renew them, and create new ones by oneself
      (Department of Subject Education)
      (1) Deep understanding of subjects, especially elementary and middle school subjects
      (2) Solid practical skills in teaching methods for various subjects.
      (3) Ability to develop teaching methods and curricula for diverse and creative subjects, based on verification in actual educational settings
2. Ability to synthesize across disciplinary boundaries
      The ability to learn by intersecting with other fields and disciplines, while keeping one’s own specialty at the core, and to respond creatively to the various educational issues that continue to change and newly emerge.
3. Research skills as a research practitioner
      The ability to stand at the forefront of educational research by moving back and forth between the field of education and the field of research, while collaborating with related institutions
Graduation Approval and Degree Awarding
 In the master’s program of the Graduate School of Education, a Master of Education degree is awarded to those who have acquired the above knowledge and the required abilities and qualities, based on a rigorous grading and degree approval process with definite and clarified standards.


Graduate School of Teaching Education (Professional Degree Program)
 The educational objective of the professional degree program (Graduate School of Teacher Education) is to foster teachers equipped with practical inquiring and problem-solving skills. They are expected to continue to learn in changing society and play an active role as the core of a teaching profession. To achieve this educational objective, a Master of Education (Professional) degree is awarded to those who have acquired the following qualities and abilities.
1. Ability to practice teaching based on advanced knowledge and skills
 Advanced skills to design and implement lesson plans in classes, in which children learn independently and collaboratively, while considering learning support that meets their individual needs.
2. Skills for classroom management based on understanding of children
 Advanced ability to understand children and the ongoing situation surrounding them from multiple perspectives, to build good relationships with them, and to manage the classroom appropriately by listening to their thoughts and wishes.
3. Skills for educational management and school administration based on adequate understanding of issues
 Advanced skills for organizational management that enable them to adequately grasp school issues, tackle them, and become core school leaders in school management
4. Skills for practice research based on deep reflection
 Advanced research skills to go back and forth between practice and theory while reflecting deeply on practice as a teacher-practitioner
 In the professional degree program, completion is granted to those who have acquired the required knowledge and the required qualities and abilities by completing the prescribed educational course. Grades are strictly to be evaluated based on the definite and clarified standards.


Graduate School of Science and Engineering
<Master’s Program>
In the master’s program, students are required to complete a prescribed curriculum and conduct research based on expertise in their program  (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Regulatory Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Applied Physics , Information and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering , or Interdisciplinary Education Program for Applied  Science and Technology in the Global Environment). A Master of Science degree or a Master of Engineering degree is awarded to those who have acquired the abilities and cultivated the qualities required for each major and program.

<Doctoral Program>
    In the doctoral program, a Doctor of Science or a Doctor of Engineering is awarded to those who have completed the prescribed educational course, made progress with the results of research in their expertise, and acquired and cultivated the required abilities and qualities.
